Fairy FAQs

Are there such things as fairies?
I would like to believe so. When I was a young girl, my grandmother would take me into the garden and the surrounding woods to meet and play with the fairies. She would point them out to me and describe them, but I could never see them. She said the "sight" was a gift and that some people have it and some people don't. She said that many times when people see butterflies, dragonflies or ladybugs, they are actually seeing fairies!

Japanese culture has a unique take of fairies. Visit www.youkaimura.org and learn more!

Are you a fairy?
I am a human who earns the right to be an honorary fairy on a daily basis. My grandmother taught me how to do this when I was young. There are four rules you must follow every day:

Rule ONE: Fairies are the most polite creatures on the planet. They always say "Yes please" or "No thank you". Sometimes, humans need to really practice to get this one.

Rule TWO: Fairies speak in quiet and low voices. This is to prevent someone from hearing them, discovering their secret magic, and catching them. Fairies really don't like getting captured.

Sometimes, fairies do speak in very loud voices (it can be pretty surprising the first time you hear it!), but only if they are being threatened or are in danger (such as being chased by dogs or badgers). First they try to escape, but if that doesn't work, they stop, turn and face their chaser and shout "stop right there!" as loud as they can. Sometimes this works and scares the attacker, but sometimes the fairies have to roll up their sleeves and fight. They may be little, but they are very crafty and always put up a good fight.

Rule THREE: Fairies drink eight 8oz glasses of water every day. This reminds them to water their plants and that everyone needs lots of water to stay healthy and happy.

Rule FOUR: Fairies love all kinds of plants and treat them with respect.

If you follow all four rules a day, you too can be a fairy!

Have you ever seen a fairy? I have - how do I submit my sighting story?
If you have seen a fairy and would like to tell me about it, please send me an e-mail. Either include your story in the body of the e-mail or send it as an attachment. If our IFFCs (Independent Fairy Fact Checkers) can verify your story, we will post it in our SIGHTINGS section!

Also, if you have seen a mermaid or other mythical creature, be sure to send us your story!
